OBJECTIVES:
 To familiarize the fundamental concepts of microprocessor architecture.
 To gain knowledge about high performance CISC and RISC architectures.
 To study about 8 bit Microcontrollers viz. 68HC11 and PIC.

UNIT I OVERVIEW 9
Generic Architecture--Instruction Set – Data formats –Addressing modes – Memory hierarchy -
register file –Cache – Virtual memory and paging – Segmentation- pipelining –the instruction
pipeline – pipeline hazards – instruction level parallelism – reduced instruction set –Computer
principles – RISC versus CISC.

UNIT II HIGH PERFORMANCE CISC ARCHITECTURE – PENTIUM 9
CPU Architecture- Bus Operations – Pipelining – Brach predication – floating point unit-
Operating Modes –Paging – Multitasking – Exception and Interrupts – Instruction set –
addressing modes – Programming the Pentium processor.

UNIT III HIGH PERFORMANCE RISC ARCHITECTURE – ARM 9
Organization of CPU – Bus architecture –Memory management unit - ARM instruction set-
Thumb Instruction set- addressing modes – Programming the ARM processor.

UNIT IV MOTOROLA 68HC11 MICROCONTROLLERS 9
Instruction set addressing modes – operating modes- Interrupt system- RTC-Serial
Communication Interface – A/D Converter PWM and UART.

UNIT V PIC MICROCONTROLLER 9
CPU Architecture – Instruction set – interrupts- Timers- I2C Interfacing –UART- A/D
Converter –PWM and introduction to C-Compilers.
