UNIT I CONDUCTING MATERIALS

carrier concentration in metals.

UNIT II SEMICONDUCTING MATERIALS
Intrinsic semiconductor – carrier concentration derivation – Fermi level – Variation of Fermi level with
temperature – electrical conductivity – band gap determination – extrinsic semiconductors – carrier
concentration derivation in n-type and p-type semiconductor – variation of Fermi level with

UNIT III MAGNETIC AND SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS

UNIT V MODERN ENGINEERING MATERIALS

Metallic glasses: preparation, properties and applications.
Shape memory alloys (SMA): Characteristics, properties of NiTi alloy, application, advantages and
disadvantages of SMA Nanomaterials: synthesis –plasma arcing – chemical vapour deposition –
sol-gels – electrodeposition – ball milling - properties of nanoparticles and applications.
Carbon nanotubes: fabrication – arc method – pulsed laser deposition – chemical vapour deposition
- structure – properties and applications.
